Internal insulation
Thermal insulation between heated spaces
Besides providing the required thermal barrier, the insulation acts also as acoustic protection (slabs between flats, partition walls).
Thermal insulation adjacent to cold spaces
Internal thermal insulation for constructions adjacent to cold spaces or to external air, acts as an internal thermal shield. Internal insulation is used for roofs, building shells, walls adjacent to cold spaces, floors or ceilings adjacent to un-heated spaces or to the ground…
When should the thermal insulation be installed internally?
-
when a precisely specified temperature has to be maintained constant (cold stores, swimming pools…),
-
if the spaces are used occasionally or only during part of the day, and the heat which could have been accumulated in the thermal mass of the structure would be wasted,
-
if we wish to insulate only certain spaces or areas, in contact with un-heated spaces or areas,
-
if thermal insulation cannot or must not be installed externally, e.g. because of planning restrictions for new structures,
-
if additional thermal insulation cannot or must not be installed externally, e.g. in listed buildings.
Thermal comfort provided by the internal thermal insulation
-
As the surface temperature of the internally insulated wall is approximately the same as the air temperature, no air circulation is felt in the space. Therefore, to provide equal thermal comfort, the air temperature can be a few degrees lower than that in externally insulated buildings. Only a few centimeters of thermal insulation are needed for this purpose.
-
The insulation can remain visible, covered with a render coat or overlaid with gypsum boards. The type of product depends on which finishing layer will be chosen.
XPS insulation – where other insulation materials fail
Some of the “new solutions” for using XPS insulation, such as inverted flat roofs or insulation below grade, where the thermal insulation layer protects the waterproofing, are now common practice. However, the use of internal thermal insulation should be planned carefully, taking into account all the possible drawbacks of insulating internally (such as thermal bridging, relining of internal walls, re-fitting of electrical and water supply elements). FIBRANxps products are suitable for highly efficient internal thermal insulation in a number of different applications.
